I have 6 2TB Seagate LP 5900 rpm drives in my readyNAS Pro, and so far so good.
Four of them I bought about a year ago (Frys). Two of them I bought on a sale from Microcenter recently.
Heat: I had a Hitachi 2TB 7200 rpm drive that was always 45 degrees when in operation. The Seagates were 39 degrees on the average.
Noise: I could hear my Hitachi clicking and trashing all the way from my living room to my dining room. Not so with my Seagates. When the plates started to spin I could hear the Hitachi do all kinds of noises as well. This was true when the Hitachi was in the NAS and when it was in it's own usb enclosure. When I removed the Hitachi from the RAID (after it failed) and added more Seagates, the noise issue was gone.
Reliability: My single Hitachi died, my 4 almost same age Seagates are cruising, now what are the chances of that happening...
In my experience, the Seagates are cool and so my NAS doesn't have to spin the fans too much, making the whole system silent. They are also relatively inexpensive, and somewhat power efficient. I do not need the hard drive speed in my NAS. However, if you are a gamer and plan to install a hard drive in your custom gaming PC, I can understand if 5900 rpm 3Gbs 32M cache is not going to cut it, and may be better off looking for something else that properly exploits the features of your motherboard.
I was worried about buying these drives back when I purchased them @ Frys given the problems that their previous 1.5TB line had. But so far these hard drives have not failed me.

As I was installing this drive in my Mac Pro yesterday, it really struck me that a device with the same footprint as a 320 MEGABYTE drive that came installed on my 90 Mhz Pentium fifteen years ago can now hold two TERABYTES. Truly staggering how fast technology is improving.
Seagate has been producing storage devices since the late seventies, and I've always found their products to mostly be reliable and trouble-free. This new drive is no exception. It installs easily (as all drives do) and is fast enough for high definition video editing from an AVCHD source. This frustration free packaging edition comes with just the bare drive, no cables or screws are included.
This is also the latest in a new line of "green" hard drives coming from major storage manufacturers, rotating at 5900 RPM (most larger drives tend to spin at 7200). The slower rotation speed results in slightly longer drive latency times, so replacing a 7200 rpm drive with this one for a boot drive might result in a slight reduction in performance.
Still, a two terabyte drive is best suited for long term storage such as photos, videos, large files, etc. And if that is an intended goal you need to continue shopping once this item is added to your cart for a reliable backup solution. No matter how great the manufacturer hard drives will eventually fail and die. These are tiny and complex machines with parts spinning thousands of times per minute. The fact they work at all is a miracle!
I suggest buying two or more comparably sized external drives and develop a backup strategy that includes rotating the backup drives offsite (work, second home, safe deposit box, etc). On the Mac it's easy, simply have Time Machine do the work for you. On the PC, find something that works and develop a regular plan of backing up your work. There are online services that can securely (but slowly) back your data as well.
Given how my Mac Pro is a glutton when it comes to electricity, I doubt this power saving drive will result in any kind of reduction in my monthly electric bill. Still, this is an affordable way to add a significant amount of storage. Just be sure to back it up.
One other note -- Amazon did not package this drive well for shipping to me. It was protected only by plastic air pillows, a few of which deflated by the time the drive arrived. It would be better if they followed the lead of other distributors of bare drives and wrap them in bubble wrap to protect shocks during shipping.

Running continuously for 1 month so far and very satisfied with product. Took a while for me to decide on a particular 2TB
model with all the failures generally plaguing drives of this size. Stuck with Seagate
as I always had good support from them. Drive going to be used in a Cisco Mediahub.

Several complained about the drive noise. I hear NO NOISE, it's the quietest drive I've ever owned. It's the fastest, too. Seagate reliability is OUTSTANDING. It installed in a snap. What's all the complaining about?? I really don't get why folks are saying it's loud or needs a firmware update. If it needed one at all, it was in early versions, and not this one.
